Ortega was born on 21 February 1991 in Los Angeles, California; he has dual citizenship because both of his parents are Mexican citizens and are from Hermosillo, Sonora. He was raised in San Pedro, California, in a Section 8 housing development. At Al Martinez Muay Thai Kickboxing in Wilmington, California, Brian began his martial arts training when he was 5 years old. At the age of 13, he started learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California, under the instruction of Rorion Gracie and his sons Ryron, Rener, and Ralek Gracie.

At the age of 17, Ortega met boxing trainer James Luhrsen, who took him in and taught him how to strike. In the early years of his career, Ortega only competed in Southern California for regional promotions. He defeated Carlos Garces in a five-round match by unanimous decision to win his first professional MMA title and became the featherweight champion of Respect in the Cage. Before joining the UFC in April 2014, Ortega went on to amass an 8-0 unbeaten record.
