Early Life
He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. In 1961, he graduated from Mumford High school and moved to Arizona to continue his education. He joined the University of Arizona and graduated with a degree in psychology. Bruckheimer was a known film enthusiast and a talented photographer. After completing his college education he worked as a creative producer for an advertising company between Detroit and New York.
Bruckheimer Career
His career was in its initial phases, Bruckheimer served as a producer for several commercials, including one for Pepsi. He left his advertising job in the 1970s and started working in film production with director Dick Richards. The duo worked On Farewell, My Lovely, and March or Die. It was Bruckheimer’s work with Paul Schrader on American Gigolo and Cat people that helped him get noticed in Hollywood. Later in the 1980s and 1990s, he worked with Don Simpson as a co-producer and released some very successful films for Paramount Pictures.
Bruckheimer’s first huge commercial success was Flashdance and after that, he produced some of the most successful commercial films of the time including Beverly Hills Cop films, Top Gun, and Days of Thunder. The Beverly Hills Cop was the film that launched Eddie Murphy’s career and was Paramount highest grossing winter release. Bruckheimer later collaborated on six movies with Top Gun director Tony Scott. With such successful releases, he and Simpson signed a three years agreement with Paramount Pictures. They served as line producers for theatrical and television projects through their company Simpson/Bruckheimer Productions.
The duo made a formidable pair and everyone was starting to call Bruckheimer ‘Mr. Outside’ for his filmmaking expertise and Simpson as ‘Mr. Inside’ due to his industry contacts. The Rock was the duo’s last project on which they collaborated before Simpson’s death in 1996.
