Adam Neumann Early Life
Born in Israel, Neumann was raised in different homes because of his parents’ divorce. Growing up, Neumann suffered from dyslexia and had difficulty reading and writing. He spent his teenage years in South Israel and later joined Israel Navy. After that, he attended the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, New York City.

Neumann began his career as a businessman when he founded a children’s clothing company by name of ‘Krawlers’. Neumann met Miguel McKelvey in 2008. They met through a mutual friend while working on ‘Green Desk’. Green Desk was a shared workspace business venture that focused on sustainability and it served as the precursor to WeWork. After meeting there, the two started working together. After selling their interest in Green Desk and backed with a 15 million dollar investment from Joel Schreiber who was a real estate developer, the duo founded WeWork in 2010. Neumann’s idea behind creating WeWork was to form a feeling of togetherness and belonging that is seen in Israeli culture but is somewhat lacking in the West.

From the company was started in 2010 till 2019, Neumann served as its CEO. The debate about whether he should stay a CEO or not started in 2018 after he was accused of inappropriate behavior in the workspace. In 2019, Neumann resigned from his position and named Artie Minson and Sebastian Gunningham as his successors. In 2019, it was reported by The Wall Street Journal that Neumann was set to receive a total of 1.7 billion dollars from stakeholder SoftBank after he stepped down from WeWork’s board and if he severed most of his ties from the company. However, with various legal battles and settlements his net worth had dropped to 750 million dollars according to Forbes in 2021. In 2020, he was listed as a billionaire.
In 2019, he also co-founded the Family office with his wife Rebekah Neumann. It was dubbed the 166 2nd Financial Services that the couple founded to manage their personal wealth. They have invested over a billion dollars in real estate and other startup ventures.
In 2022, Neumann found a new interest in real estate and announced a real estate company called ‘Flow’ which he was developing with Andreessen Horowitz. He was also reported to the person behind ‘Flowcarbon’ that same year. Flowcarbon is a carbon credit trading platform.
