Early Life and Career

Albert S. Ruddy was born in Montreal but he was raised in New York City. He grew up in Miami Beach, Florida, and started his high school at the Brooklyn Technical High School. Ruddy was able to earn a scholarship at the City College of New York to study chemical engineering. He earned his graduate degree from the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California in 1956.

His first professional job was working as an architect for a construction company which was based in Hackensack, New Jersey. After that, Ruddy was able to meet Warner Bros. studio chief Jack L. Warner. He also served as a programmer trainee at the Rand Corporation. However, he wanted to get back into the entertainment industry and as a result, he landed a position as a TV writer for Universal Studios. He left his position when he was offered a production job by Marlon Brando Sr. on the 1965’s film titled ‘Wild Seeds’. The film was his first step toward the production business.

Ruddy Success

After completing his work on Wild Seeds, Ruddy set out to co-create CBS’s show ‘Hogan’s Horses’ the show ran for six seasons (1965-1971) and became a commercial as well as a critical success. The sitcom helped Ruddy gain his footing in the industry and following that he returned to film productions and produced movies including Little Fauss and Big Halsy and Making It.

Ruddy was able to make it big in Hollywood following the release of ‘The Godfather (1972). The film was based on the epic novel of Mario Puzo and became a massive hit both commercially and critically. Ruddy served as a producer for the film and The Godfather was nominated for a total of 11 Academy Awards and won in 3 categories. After the success of The Godfather, he produced ‘The Longest Yard’ in 1974. The film was described as the ‘1st successful modern sports film’. He also worked on a film titled ‘Coonskin’. The film was a subject of a lot of controversies but eventually became one of his most acclaimed works. Ruddy produced various commercially and critically successful films over the years and in 2004 he worked on ‘Million Dollar Baby’ which helped him secure his second Oscar win.
