On August 29, 1981, Brian Chesky was born in Niskayuna, New York. His parents, Robert and Deborah Chesky are both social workers. He showed a love of art and design as he was growing up. This sparked his interest in landscape architecture. For his higher education, Chesky attended the Rhode Island School of Design. He graduated in 2004 with a bachelor of fine arts in industrial design.

Chesky joined the Los Angeles-based company 3DID as an industrial designer and strategist after graduating. He then relocated to San Francisco in 2007 and shared a room with Joe Gebbia, an old classmate from college.
