Dara Khosrowshahi, an American businessman of Iranian descent, was born on May 28, 1969. He now serves as Uber’s CEO. Khosrowshahi was formerly the CEO of the Expedia Group, which owns a variety of travel ticket aggregators.

Khosrowshahi was raised in a mansion on the family’s property after being born in a rich Muslim family in Iran in 1969. He is the youngest of Lili and Asghar (Gary) Khosrowshahi’s three children. His mother made the decision to leave everything behind and leave Iran in 1978, shortly before the Iranian Revolution, because his family was singled out for persecution due to their riches. Later, their business was nationalized. First, his family escaped to the south of France. Khosrowshahi’s father traveled to Iran in 1982 when he was 13 years old to take care of his grandfather. Khosrowshahi’s father was unable to leave Iran for six years, therefore he was absent during his adolescent years.

He received his diploma from Tarrytown’s prestigious university-preparatory Hackley School in 1987. He earned a B.S. in electrical and electronics engineering in 1991 while attending Brown University and was a part of the social fraternity Sigma Chi.

Khosrowshahi started working as an analyst at Allen & Company, an investment bank, in 1991. He left Allen & Company in 1998 to work for one of his old bank customers, Barry Diller, first at Diller’s USA Networks, where he held the posts of senior vice president for strategic planning and subsequently president, and later as chief financial officer of IAC, another business owned by Diller.

Khosrowshahi was appointed Expedia’s CEO in August 2005 after IAC bought the company in 2001. Ten years later, in 2015, as part of a long-term employment deal, Expedia granted him $90 million in stock options under the condition that he remain with the business through 2020. He was honored by Ernst & Young in June 2013 with the Pacific Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year award. He earned among the highest salaries of any CEOs in the US in 2016. Khosrowshahi succeeded Uber’s founder Travis Kalanick as CEO in August 2017.

His invested Expedia stock options, which were then valued $184 million, were forfeited, while Uber reportedly paid him more than $200 million to become CEO. He also sits on the board of directors for Uber. Khosrowshahi oversaw Uber’s first public offering in May 2019, which he discussed with staff members in a letter to the whole firm.
