David Ladd Early Life
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Ladd was no stranger to entertainment industry as both his parents Alan Ladd and Sue Carol were actors. Growing up, Ladd attended Harvard – Westlake School, Los Angeles. Ladd graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science and following that he also completed his military obligations by serving in United States Air Force Reserve.
David Ladd Acting Career
Ladd began his professional acting career in Hollywood in 1957. He was offered a supporting role in a film with his father. The film was called ‘The Big Land’. The film was a great success and launched Ladd’s career. Following that film, he was offered a role in Olivia de Havilland’s starrer ‘The Proud Rebel’. The movie was made by Samuel Goldwyn Jr and Ladd played a mute in the film. He was awarded a Golden Globe award for ‘Best Newcomer of 1958’, a special award for ‘Best Juvenile Actor’, and was nominated for Best Supporting actor, for his work in ‘The Proud Rebel’.
Following a successful start as an actor, Ladd appeared in various films and television projects. He appeared in The Sad Horse, A Dog of Flanders, Raymie, and Misty during 1960s. In 1970s he appeared in feature films including R.P.M., Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Day of the Locust, The Treasure of Jamaica Reef, and The Wild Geese.
His TV appearances include Bonanza, Wagon Train, Family Affairs, and Shirley Temple’s Storybook.
David Ladd Production Career
In 1988, Ladd debut as a solo producer by making the film titled ‘The Serpent and the Rainbow’. The film was based on a book by author Wade Davis. Following the film’s success, Ladd founded a production company with his brother Alan Ladd Jr. The company was called ‘Pathe Films’ and was also developed in 1988. They worked on producing several movies with Pathe Films before acquiring the company ‘Metro Goldwyn Mayer’ (MGM).
Ladd held the position of senior production executive at the MGM and helped revive the production studio. He helped the company get various hits including 1995’s Get Shorty. In 1998, he left his position as an executive and started working as a producer for them. He produced various projects including The Mod, Hart’s War, and A Guy Thing.
After MGM was sold, Ladd started his career as an independent producer. He currently works for various studios including Fox, Paramount, and Universal.
David Ladd also serves as a member for Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, Producers Guild of America, and he is also an emeritus member of Screen Actors Guild.
