He relocated to Rockland County at the age of 8, where he attended Ramapo High School before graduating. Zaslav graduated from Binghamton University with a bachelor of science. He then earned a JD with honors from Boston University School of Law in 1985 and began his legal career in New York with LeBoeuf, Lamb, Lieby, and MacRae.
A career in NBC Universal
In 1989, Zaslav joined NBC and negotiated for the cable and satellite coverage of NBC Universal networks while serving as president of Cable and Domestic TV and New Media Distribution. Bravo, CNBC World, SCI-FI, A&E, The History Channel, and The Biography Channel, were among the other NBC Universal properties that Zaslav controlled.
Success in Discovery
On November 16, 2006, Zaslav took over as CEO of Discovery Communications, replacing Judith McHale. Zaslav sparked a change in the organization’s strategy, intending to reposition its primary networks as multi-platform brands and reposition the corporation as a “content company.” As CEO, Zaslav oversaw the development and launch of new networks like Planet Green The Hub, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Velocity, and Investigation Discovery. Under his direction, Discovery went public in 2008, was included in the Fortune 500 in 2014, and purchased Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018.
Success
It was revealed in May 2021 that Zaslav will act as the CEO of a proposed merger between Discovery and a spin-out of AT&T’s Warner Media. Zaslav faced harsh criticism in August 2022 for his choice to concentrate on larger theatrical films by drastically reducing the quantity of original programming on HBO Max. The overall accounted loss reduced the company’s market capitalization by close to $25 billion. Several of those projects, including Scoob! Holiday Haunt and Batgirl, were either nearly finished or in the latter stages of post-production.
