Don Peebles Early Life
On 2 March 1960 Peebles was born in Washington, D.C. His grandfather worked as a doorman at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. Peebles moved to Detroit when he was eight years old. He lived there for five years. He returned to Washington, D.C., at the age of thirteen, where he finished high school while working as a Congressional Page. Peebles studied pre-medicine at Rutgers University. Don eventually decided to pursue a real estate profession following his freshman year. Due to the fact that many businesspeople would not do business with an African-American, he experienced considerable difficulties. Peebles claims that helping his father work on cars as a young child helped develop his strong work ethic.

Peebles left Rutgers University following his first year of study there in 1979. He started working as a real estate sales agent and appraiser in Washington, D.C. At the age of 23, he founded the residential and commercial real estate evaluation company RDP Corporation in 1983. Later that year, Marion Barry, the real estate tax appeals board appointed him to Washington’s Board of Equalization and Review. Peebles was chosen Chairperson of the Board by Washington Mayor Marion Barry a year later. He held that position until 1988. The location for his first real estate development project was bought in 1986 by a partnership managed by Peebles. Peebles established RDP Assessment Appeals Services in 1990. This Washington-based company handled commercial tax assessment appeals. Throughout the 1990s, Peebles kept acquiring office buildings and potential development sites in Washington, D.C.
Peebles renovated the 1930s-era Royal Palm hotel in Miami Beach in 1996. The Royal Palm Resort became the first significant hotel built and owned by an African American in the country. Peebles also collaborated on the development of “The Lincoln”, a mixed-use building in South Beach with Class A office space. Peebles expanded into San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York in the early 2000s. Peebles has served on the Real Estate Board of New York’s Board of Governors. He was also the former Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 1992, he was invited to the Economic Summit in Arkansas hosted by then-President-elect Clinton.
