Franz’s father was not a fan of football, but Franz still played football at the age of 9. His idol was 1954 FIFA World Cup winner Fritz Walter. In 1963, he was banned from West Germany.

During the 1964-1965 league, he won Regional League South. During 1966-1967, he won the German Cup and in 1967 he won the Cup Winners’ Cup. From 1968-1969, he became the captain of the team. During his leadership, the club won league championships from 1972 to 1974. He made a hat-trick in the European Cup and won while keeping the trophy permanently. Since 1968, he earned the nickname Der Kaiser. In 1977, he made a contract with New York Cosmos. He played with them for four seasons, and they won a Soccer Bowl in 1977, 1978, and 1980. Franz retired after two years after winning the Bundesliga title and won the final season for New York Cosmos.

In 1971, Franz became the captain of the team and in 1972 they won the European Championship.

In 1974, West Germany won its first FIFA World Cup and Franz became the first captain to ever win a FIFA World Cup. In 1076, they entered the European final but lost the game against Czechoslovakia. He got the title of Team of The Tournament.

When Franz returned to Germany, he became the manager of the West German national team. His team got into the 1986 world cup but lost. In 1990, he led his team to the finals of the World Cup, and they won the match against Argentina. He has won a Cup for being the best player and for the manager as well. He then moved to Olympique de Marseille but left it after a year. Marseille won the 1990-91 French championship and was the runner-up for the 1990-91 European Cup.
