Gerd Muller Career

Muller played for West German national team and in his 62 appearances for the team, he scored 68 goals. For almost 40 years, he was Germany’s all-time leading goal scorer. Muller started his international career in 1966 and with Germany’s victory at the 1974 World cup, he ended his international career. He scored the winning goal at the 1974 World cup. Muller’s performance in the 1970 World cup combined with his performance at the 1974 World cup made him highest World cup goal scorer of the time with 14 goals. Muller also led the West Germany team to a victory at the 1972 European Championship with his two goals in the final. He ended his international career in 1974 World cup, after an argument with the German Football Association.

Muller first appearance at the club level was in his hometown club TSV 1861 Nordlingen. In 1964, he joined Bayern Munich and advanced the German club to Bundesliga. With Muller on the team, Bayern Munich won many titles during 1960s and 1970s including The German Championship 4 times, the DFB-Pokal 4 times, The European Champion’s cup 3 times, the Intercontinental cup and the European Cup Winner’s Cup. In total Muller played 427 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich and he scored 365 goals. After scoring 85 goals in 1972, Muller held the record for most goals scored in a year. After 40 years this record was broken by Lionel Messi in 2012.

He joined Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1979 and played 3 seasons for the team and scored almost 40 goals.

Muller was known for his goal scoring ability and was nicknamed ‘Bomber der Nation’ [the nation’s bomb] or ‘Der Bomber’. In 1970, he was named European Footballer of the Year. He also received the Golden Boot at 1970 FIFA World Cup. Muller was ranked 9th in the European player of the Century election held by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) in the year 1999. In the IFFHS’ World Player of the Century election he was placed on the 13th position. Pele named Muller in the FIFA 100 which was the list of world’s greatest living players. Pele compiled the FIFA 100 list in 2004.

Muller ended his club career in 1982 and after his retirement he struggled with alcoholism. However, he went through rehabilitation and was offered a job as a coach in Bayern Munich. In 2008, a sport park in Nordlingen was renamed as the Gerd Muller Stadion in his honor.

In 2015 Bayern Munich confirmed the rumors that Gerd Muller was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Muller died on 15th August 2021 at the age of 75.
