Giuseppe Meazza was a footballer, manager and player from Italy. He was called il Balilla meaning ‘little boy’. Meazza is regarded as Italy’s greatest player ever.

Meazza played for Italy national team and helped them secure a win in two consecutive FIFA World cups in 1934 and 1938. He was the captain of the team in 1938 World cup and was named to the All-star Team. He also won the Golden Ball Award in 1934 World cup tournament and was named the best player. Gianni Brera called Meazza the greatest footballer of all time. He is one of the three Italian footballers to win the FIFA World cup twice. Italian press also called him ‘il genio’ meaning the genius.

He was called il genio due to his technical skills, goal scoring ability, and creative game. He was ranked as the fourth best player in the history of World cup. Meazza also helped Italy win the Central European International Cup in 1930. The Central European International Cup was a three-year international tournament that was played between the strongest central and eastern Europe national teams. Italy was a runner up of Central European International cup in 1932 and won the cup a second time in 1935.

During his club career, he played for Inter Milan and played a total of 365 games scoring 242 goals. He helped them win three Serie A titles and The Coppa Italia. He also played for A.C. Milan and Juventus.

Meazza won Serie A top scorer title three times. He has scored 216 goals in Serie A and is the 4th goal scorer of Serie A. He is the 2nd highest goal scorer in Italy national team. With a total of 338 goals, Meazza is the 3rd highest Italian goal scorer in all competitions. At the age of 23, he became the youngest player to score 100 goals in Serie A. in 1980 as an honor to Meazza, the San Siro stadium in Milan was renamed Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. He was induced in Italian Football Hall of Fame posthumously. Meazza scored a total of 537 goals in his career.

After his retirement as a footballer, Meazza joined the Italy national team as coach. He also coached several Italian clubs including Inter Milan, Atalanta, and Pro Patria. He also coached Turkish club Besiktas and was the head coach on Italy national team in 1952 Summer Olympics.

Meazza died due to a pancreas failure on August 21, 1979. He was in Lissone, Italy at the time of his death and he is buried at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan.
