On April 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, Hugh Hefner was born. His parents were both natives of Nebraska and were employed as teachers and accountants. He only has one younger brother, Keith. Hefner went to Sayre Elementary School and Steinmetz High School for his early education. After graduating from high school, Hugh served as a military newspaper writer for the US Army from 1944 until 1946. Hefner graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with a bachelor’s degree in 1949. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in just two and a half years, with minors in both creative writing and art. Before dropping out, he studied graduate sociology at Northwestern for one semester.

Hefner’s career began as a copywriter for Esquire magazine in 1952. He left his position when he was denied a pay raise of $5. The following year, he obtained a mortgage loan for $600 and amassed $8,000, including $1,000 from his mother. This was enough to start a gentleman’s magazine that featured the famed Playboy centerfold. He released his first issue of the magazine in December 1953, exactly one year after leaving Esquire. It included images from a nude calendar photo shoot of Marilyn Monroe which she performed in 1949. It immediately rose to prominence as one of America’s most widely read periodicals and sold 50,000 copies.  In addition to being the magazine’s inventor, he served as the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, the magazine’s publishing house. Later, he started presenting a number of Playboy TV programs. Hugh founded ethnically diverse “private key clubs” during the civil rights era. In 1966, Hefner sent Alex Haley to interview George Lincoln Rockwell, who had founded the American Nazi Party. In 1979, the television program “Roots: The Next Generations” recreated the historic interview. Although Play Boy’s publication peaked in the 1970s and switched from a monthly to a quarterly format in 2019, it is still widely read and popular today.
