Calacanis was born to Greek and Irish parents in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. He has two brothers. In 1988, he earned his high school diploma from Xaverian. After that, he went to Fordham University and graduated with a B.A. in psychology.

In the 1990s, Calacanis started his career as a reporter in New York, where he covered the internet industry. On September 24, 2003, Calacanis and Brian Alvey co-founded the blog network Weblogs, Inc., which received an angel investment from Mark Cuban. Weblogs, Inc.’s blogs company was producing $1,000 per day simply from AdSense two years after its founding. [6] In October 2005, Time Warner’s America Online agreed to acquire Weblogs, Inc. for $25-30 million.

Calacanis left his roles as CEO of Weblogs, Inc. and general manager of Netscape, according to a TechCrunch story dated November 16, 2006. On his blog and the Gillmor Gang podcast, Calacanis later provided confirmation of this.

After growing tired of being overweight, Calacanis launched an internet craze he named “fatblogging” in 2007. Calacanis established the Open Angel Forum in 2009, an event that brings together early-stage businesses and angel investors. Calacanis argues that companies should not have to pay fees to pitch angel investors, citing expenses ranging from $1,000 to $8,000 for a single 10- to 15-minute presentation. Calacanis has invested in Robinhood, Wealthfront, Uber, Desktop Metal, Datastax, Thumbtack, Superhuman, and Trello as an angel investor.

In 2017, HarperCollins published a book about angel investing by Calacanis titled “Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups—Timeless Advice from an Angel Investor Who Turned $100,000 into $100,000,000.” Calacanis made a $1 billion investment in the meditation app Calm in 2018.
