Jeff Immelt Early Life
Jeffery Robert Immelt was born on February 19, 1956 in Cincinnati. His father worked as a manager in the aircraft division of General Electric, and his mother was a teacher. Jeffrey had an elder brother named Steve who later became an attorney. He played numerous sports during his college years and has been involved in sports since he was a child. After finishing his high school studies, he applied to Dartmouth. In 1978, he graduated from Dartmouth with a bachelor’s degree in economics and applied mathematics. During his summer break from Dartmouth, he worked on the Ford Motor Company’s plant. He graduated with an MBA degree from Наrvаrd Вuѕіnеѕѕ Ѕсhооl in 1982.

Jeff started working for GE in 1982 and was hired into the company’s healthcare and plastics/appliances divisions. He was appointed a GE executive in 1989, and in 1997 he joined the board of GE Capital. From 1997 until his promotion to CEO in 2001, he oversaw GE’s Healthcare segment. He was regarded as the hand-picked successor to previous CEO Jack Welch when he stepped down. He was appointed General Electric’s CEO in 2001, just one day before the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The attacks caused GE’s insurance division to lose hundreds of millions of dollars. Immelt mainly relied on acquisitions to drive GE throughout his tenure as CEO. His strategy was in contrast to Welch’s, who prioritized organic growth. Under Jeff’s leadership, GE sold the NBC television network, its appliance division and its plastics company.
Many people have attacked his leadership of GE for eliminating American employment and paying little to no corporate income taxes. Additionally, he invested money in stock buybacks at rates that ultimately turned out to be expensive. The stock price of GE fell 30% while he was CEO. It wiped $150 billion from the company’s market value. Other than GE, Immelt serves on the board of the charitable Robin Hood Foundation. The foundation works to combat poverty in New York City. He was chosen to appear on Time Magazine’s list of the World’s Most Influential People in 2008. He became a member of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board in 2009. He was appointed chairperson of the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in 2011.
