On January 12, 1964, Jimmy John Liautaud was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He is the second born of Gina and James Sr. Greg, Robby and Lara are three of his siblings. Liautaud attended the exclusive prep school Elgin Academy when he was younger. He continued to enroll at Eastern Illinois University but left after just one semester.

His long-held ambition to launch his own business got momentum when he requested his father for funding to launch his own food business. Liautaud made the decision to open a sandwich store after doing an extensive study. Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches debuted for business on January 13, 1983. Despite the fact that his sandwiches tasted fantastic, his location did not give him the financial success he deserved. Liautaud opted to offer delivery of his sandwiches to increase sales.
He started by delivering samples to the local Eastern Illinois University dorms door to door. The restaurant began turning a profit at the end of his first year.
