Jackson always wanted to be a boxer and during his stay in East Chicago, he found good success as a boxer with Golden Gloves Program. Joe Jackson and Katherine Scruse met each other when she was just 17 years old and the couple got married in 1949. They had ten children together and Joe left his boxing career to support his family.

He formed ‘The Jackson Brothers’ group with his three elder sons and started pushing them into long and intense rehearsals. ‘The Jackson 5’ was founded when Jackson added his two younger sons into the band as well. The Jackson 5 consisted of Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, while Jackson served as their talent manager. The group ‘The Jackson 5’ were able to secure a few local gigs and High school functions. Jackson started launching the career of The Jackson 5 relentlessly and eventually he helped them land a performance at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Jackson helped The Jackson 5 sign their first record contract. The contract was with Gordon Keith who owned Steeltown Records in Gary, Indiana. The group released three albums and four singles in US within 10 months and the songs were a No.1 hit.
Following the Jackson 5, Joe Jackson also made his daughters perform at various casinos and resorts. Jackson formed ‘Ivory Tower International Records’ and as a manager he signed various artists and allowed them to tour internationally and perform opening acts for The Jackson 5. Jackson also managed his daughter Janet Jackson and helped establish her career as an actress and recording artist. He had landed in some controversy over his strict and controlling behaviour towards his family in the late 1980s. Reports stated that he was abusive towards his children and his son Michael claimed he was a victim of physical and emotion abuse by his father. However, he always denied them.
