John Williams Early Life

Williams, whose father played percussion in the CBS radio symphony, was raised in New York. Growing up around music, he started learning the piano and subsequently picked up the trumpet, trombone and clarinet. Williams and his family relocated to Los Angeles in 1948 where Williams pursued private composition studies as well as a brief stint at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and while there he organized band music and started directing. At the age of 15, he decided that he wanted to be a concert pianist and at the age of 19 he debuted his first original piece, a piano sonata. Williams attended Julliard upon his return to the United States, where renowned piano teacher Madame Rosina Lhevinne assisted him in honing his performance abilities.

John Williams has had a successful 60-year career as a composer, conductor and pianist. Williams found employment with the Hollywood studios, eventually providing the music for shows like “Peter Gunn”, “Some Like It Hot”, “South Pacific”, “The Apartment” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”. At the age of 24, William joined 20th Century-Fox where he worked with prominent Golden Age performers including Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Alfred and Lionel Newman and others. He has performed and made arrangements for artists such as Doris Day, Vic Damone and Mahalia Jackson in the popular music genre. His orchestrating work paved the way for his significant television composition assignments, including “Alcoa Premiere”, “Checkmate”, “Gilligan’s Island”, “Lost in Space”, “Land of the Giants” and his Emmy-winning scores for “Heidi” and “Jane Eyre”. His original music had its big-screen debut in the films “Daddy-O” and “Because They’re Young”. In addition to Indiana Jones, E.T., Superman, Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Home Alone and the first three Harry Potter films, Williams has also written the music for a number of other notable films. He also wrote and orchestrated a song for the U.S. president’s inauguration in 2009.
