Born on 8 June, 1958 in New York, Keenan Ivory Wayans was born into a family of entertainers. His father, Howell Stouton, worked as a grocery manager and his mother, Elvera Alethia was a house wife and a social worker. He has nine siblings in total. His early education was from Seward Park High School and he later went to Tuskegee University on scholarship to pursue a degree in engineering. But to focus on his career as a comedian, he left his degree just one semester before graduating.

His initial days were not very successful as he performed on New York stand-up stage which later made him relocate to Los Angeles, where he hoped to chase his passion of TV and comedy. Following brief appearances in supporting roles on TV series like “Chips”, “The Renegades” and “Cheers” as well as a small role as a stand-up comedian in “Star 80” (1983), Keenan’s major break came in the military drama “For Love and Honor” on television . From then, he transitioned to increasingly prominent parts on nighttime television, such as “Hill Street Blues”, “Benson” and “A Different World”. Keenan’s name became well-known as an actor and writer after he connected with the famed comedian Eddie Murphy and received writing credits for the opening segment of Eddie’s live performance documentary, “Eddie Murphy: Raw”, and for Joan River’s late-night talk show, “The Late Show”. He partnered with Robert Townsend for “Hollywood Shuffle” (1987), a stinging comedy emphasizing the predicament of the black actor in 1970s Hollywood, and together they achieved their first box office success. Keenen also had his own evening talk program at the end of the 1990s, “Late night talk the Wayans way”. The show in which he served as a host, writer, and an executive producer, faced stiff competition but failed to take off, surviving for only a few seasons. One of his many successes include “Scary Movie” as one of the highest grossing film directed by an African American till it was surpassed by Fantastic Four in 2005.
