Barris was born on 09 August 1974 in Inglewood, California, U.S.A. His father was a Muslim, who frequently visited Kenya; this is how Barris got his first name. At the age of 5, he went through the separation of his parents and was raised by his single mother Tina.  His younger brother died of cancer. Tina worked day in and day out to raise her four children.  Barris graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 1996 opting Mass Media Arts as his major.

Barris made his debut on television network through UPN sitcom series “Girlfriends” in 2000 as a writer. Eight seasons of Girlfriends were released till 2008. In 2003, he co-created and produced UPN’s popular season “America’s Next Top Model” along with Tyra Banks. This amazing show remained on the television screen till 2018 with its 24 seasons. In 2002 he met his mentor Felicia D. Henderson while working on “Soul Food” a showtime drama series and remained there till its four seasons in 2004. After quitting “Soul Food” he wrote CBS sitcom “Listen Up” in 2006 and “The Game” (2006-2014) a sequel to “Girlfriends”. Afterward, Barris penned down TBS’s “Are We There Yet?” and “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” by Fox. He is the director and executive producer of “Music love” a mini-series of Warner Brothers. He is the writer and creator of “The Start-Up” by BET and “We Got Next” by Hulu. Barris has been an executive producer on Netflix for “Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show”, “We the people” and “Entergalactic”. He made his debut as an actor in “#blackAF”.
