Barris was born on 09 August 1974 in Inglewood, California, U.S.A. His father was a Muslim, who frequently visited Kenya; this is how Barris got his first name. At the age of 5, he went through the separation of his parents and was raised by his single mother Tina. His younger brother died of cancer. Tina worked day in and day out to raise her four children. Barris graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 1996 opting Mass Media Arts as his major.

He is the writer and creator of “The Start-Up” by BET and “We Got Next” by Hulu. Barris has been an executive producer on Netflix for “Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show”, “We the people” and “Entergalactic”. He made his debut as an actor in “#blackAF”.
