Kevin O’Leary Early Life
O’Leary was raised in the Quebec town of Mount Royal. His father’s drinking was a major factor in his parent’s divorce when he was a little boy. O’Leary was just seven years old when his father passed away long after that. His mother served as the executive director of the company after his father’s passing.
O’Leary’s mother was an expert investor who put a third of her weekly paycheck into interest-bearing bonds and large-cap equities that paid dividends. As a result, her investment portfolio saw tremendous returns. O’Leary only learned of his mother’s investing prowess after she passed away when her will was carried out since she kept her investment portfolio private.
His mother taught him a lot about investing, including the advice to set aside one-third of his income. In addition to earning an MBA in entrepreneurship from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario in 1980, he graduated with honors from the University of Waterloo in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and psychology.
Kevin O’Leary Career
O’Leary worked as an assistant brand manager for Nabisco’s cat food brand after being chosen for an internship there in 1978, between the first and second years of his MBA degree. O’Leary attributes his eventual success at The Learning Company to the marketing expertise he acquired while working at Nabisco. SET was an independent television production company that produced original sports programmings such as The Original Six, Don Cherry’s Grapevine, Bobby Orr, and the Hockey Legends. The company achieved limited success with minor television shows, soccer films, sports documentaries, and short in-between-period commercials for local professional hockey games. One of his partners later bought out his share of the venture for $25,000.
