Edwards was born on25 August, 1991 in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in a one-room home with his parents and brother. Edwards was raised in an extremely violent neighborhood where his father engaged in questionable things. At nine, Edwards relocated to the city of Birmingham, and at thirteen, his father was shot in a London nightclub.
Along with his social circle, he was then involved in illegal behavior like drug dealing, street fighting, and weapon possession. At the age of 17, Leon was persuaded by his mother to join a martial arts club, so he was able to leave his lifestyle.

In 2010, he made his amateur debut at Bushido Challenge 2 – A New Dawn before turning professional. Edwards initially defeated his opponent Carl Booth by armbar submission in round two of the fight. Edwards then committed to a long deal with Fight UK MMA. He faced the strongest MMA, Damian Zlotnicki in his promotion debut and he also defeated him in the opening round. He competed in another two more fights, defeating Pawel and Delroy respectively by DQ due to an illegal knee. At the 14th Strength and Honor competition, he defeated Craig White by decision.

At UFC Fight Night on November 8, 2014, Edwards faced off against Claudio Silva in his first promotional appearance, and split votes led to his downfall.
