Lothar Matthaus is a retired football player and manager from Germany. He was the first player to receive the FIFA World Player of the Year award and he is still the only German player who have received that title. He was winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1990.

Lothar Matthaus Career

Matthaus played as a midfielder and sweeper during his career as a football player. He started his career in 1979 and started playing for Bayern Munich in 1984. He played for Bayern Munich until 1988 and helped them win Bundesliga two times and the DFB-Pokal once. In 1988, Matthaus signed with Inter Milan and during his first season (1988-1989) the team won Italian Supercup and Scudetto. He had very good seasons playing with Milan. In 1991, Milan won UEFA Cup and Matthaus was named the FIFA World Player of the Year. He returned to Bayern Munich in 1992 and won 4 Bundesliga titles, 2 DFB-Pokals, and a UEFA Cup. Matthaus played his last match for Bayern Munich in 2000. He moved to Major League Soccer during 1999-2000 season. He played in the team till October of 2000 and after that he took retirement from professional football.

Matthaus started his international career for West Germany in 1980. Germany won the UEFA Euro in 1980, while he was part of the national squad. In the 1983 World Cup, he played two games for West Germany. He was part of the national team when Germany was runner up in two consecutive FIFA World Cup. Matthaus finally led the West German team to a victory in 1990 FIFA World Cup. He held the record of playing five FIFA World Cups, however, the record was equaled in 2018 World Cup by Rafael Marquez. Matthaus was named German Footballer of the Year in 1990 and again in 1999. He is the most capped player for Germany and made a total of 150 appearances for the national made. He played for Germany for 20 years and scored 23 goals. Maradona called Matthaus ‘the best rival’ he has ever had.

Matthaus is known as one of the best midfielders in football. He was known for his precision in passing and tackling. He is good at powerful shooting and usually played midfielder from box to box on the ground.

Matthaus secured his first position as a head for Rapid Wien in 2001. He later joined Partizan as head coach in 2002. In 2003, he became manager for Hungary national team and managed the team until January 2006. The last team Matthaus coached was Bulgaria national team and he was removed from the position in 2011.

Matthaus has also worked as a TV pundit for a number of TV Channels. He has worked as an expert for the Pay TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland since 2012.
