Marc Randolph Personal Life

Randolph was born to a Jewish family in New York, U.S on 29 April 1958. He was the eldest child of Stephan Bernays Randolph, an Austrian born Nuclear Engineer, who later became financial advisor and Muriel Lipchik, who ran a real estate company. He graduated from Hamilton College in New York with a degree in Geology. Randolph married to Lorraine Kiernan in 1987 and the couple is having 3 children.

After the college, Randolph worked in mail order division in Cherry Lane Music Company and learnt the skills of direct mail and techniques of marketing business. He pioneered the roots of Macworld magazine in U.S. He also helped produce the American version of e-magazine MacUser in 1984. At Cherry Lane, Marc learned the use of computer software to track customer orders and buying behavior. To translate his skills into business plan, he co-founded computer software mail-order companies MicroWarehouse and MacWarehouse by 1987.

In late 1980s and early 1990s, he switched around for series of short stints at Silicon Valley startups. He developed company called Integrity QA to develop, debug and test the software. In late 1996, Reed Hastings’ Pure Atria acquired the Integrity QA and he was retained as Vice President of corporate marketing. Seeking admiration from Amazon.com, he went to explore the concept of selling the DVDs online that led to the launching of biggest subscription based streaming service ‘Netflix’ in 1997, in collaboration with Reed Hastings. Based on his previous experiences, Randolph designed a system for ordering and rating online movies, and based on customer feedback, future recommendations were drawn.

He served as CEO Netflix until 1999 after which he handed over the post to Hastings. Randolph left the Netflix in 2002 saying he preferred the start-up stage. Today, he does not own a significant number of shares in Netflix. Since his departure from Netflix, he served as mentor at MiddCORE and board member of Looker Data Sciences. In September 2019, he wrote a book titled That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea’.
