Albanian origin U.S. born Martin Shkreli is an entrepreneur, ex-hedge fund manager, and a pharmaceutical company executive who is presently serving time in prison for securities fraud. In 2017, Shrekli was charged, arrested, and convicted on two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiring to commit securities fraud. He was sentenced to prison for 7 years. However, it was announced that Shrekli has been released early in May 2022.

Martin Shkreli was born to an Albanian immigrant couple on 17 March 1983 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. Along with his parents, two sisters, and a brother, he grew up in a working-class community in Brooklyn. He attended Hunter College High School but dropped out before his senior year and then finished his necessary credits through City-As-School High School. He completed his graduation in Business Administration from Baruch College at the age of 21 years.

Martin Shkreli started his career with an internship at Cramer, Berkowitz, and Company Wall Street Hedge Fund. In 2006, he initiated his own hedge fund Elea Capital Management. In 2009, he started MSMB Capital Management after Elea Capital lost a $2.3 million case to Lehman Brothers Inc. But the MSMB Capital also wiped out after Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declined to approve their drug ‘Naltrexone/Bupropion’ in 2011. Shkreli founded ‘Retrophin’ under the MSMB umbrella in 2011 with an emphasis on Biotech for the treatment of rare diseases. Shkreli resigned from the company the following month and later the board filed a $65 million case against him. In 2015, Shkreli founded Turing Pharmaceuticals earning him the infamous nickname ‘Pharma Bro’ when he acquired the license of ‘Daraprim drug to treat patients with AIDS and increased its price from $13.50 to $750 per pill overnight. This action sparked massive criticism against him. In December 2015, Shkreli was arrested on charges of securities fraud, which were filed after an investigation into his tenure at MSMB Capital Management and Retrophin. He was found guilty of two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison and ordered to pay $72millions in fines.
