Early Life:

Lang was born on December 11, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York. While still residing in Florida, he started a head shop in 1966. Lang left New York University in 1967 and relocated to Coconut Grove, Florida, where he opened the head shop. Through this store, he developed a fascination for the music industry. After supporting several events in the Miami region, Lang and Marshall Brevetz founded the 1968 Pop & Underground Festival. It featured performers like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, Arthur Brown, and Blue Cheer and drew about 25,000 people on its opening day.

Career:

Lang relocated to Woodstock, New York, where he met renowned recording artist and composer Artie Kornfeld. Together, they came up with the idea for a sizable festival celebration of the 1960s social movements. They also had plans to establish a recording studio there. Woodstock was organized by Lang, Kornfeld, and collaborators John P. Roberts and Joel Rosenman in Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Before founding Just Sunshine Records and the He Organization, Lang later worked as a consultant for the Rolling Stones. After the festival, Michael and Artie Kornfeld dissolved their collaboration with Woodstock Ventures. Michael established the Just Sunshine record label and worked as a music manager in the years following Woodstock. He has managed and produced albums for a large number of artists, including Rickie Lee Jones and Billy Joel. He soon found himself in charge of Joe Cocker, who rose to fame due in large part to his appearance at Woodstock.

“The Road to Woodstock”, a New York Times best-selling book from 2009, was co-written by Michael. Michael was the creator of the Lang Organization (MLO), which managed artists and produced movies and live events. Over the years, MLO has staged a great number of important events, such as the Lincoln Center 50th Anniversary Gala, in addition to concerts for several well-known performers. He worked as an assistant producer on Wes Anderson’s first movie, “Bottle Rocket,” in 1996.
