Mike Dean Early Life
In Angleton, Texas, where he was born, Michael George Dean was brought up on a bayou. Around the age of eight, he began playing the saxophone and piano, followed by the bassoon, which he used to perform in the school orchestra. Although he preferred progressive and hard rock, his first band, which was founded in the ninth grade, played a lot of Southern standards as well as classic rock tunes. Dean began playing in cover bands for soul and funk music around 50 miles to the north in Houston, notably at the famed Emancipation Park, where he also played blues and country music.
At the same time, he joined Selena y los Dinos as a teenager. He took on the role of the group’s musical director and taught Selena, a future Tejano superstar, how to sing in tune while playing the piano.
