Momofuku Ando Early Life
On March 5, 1910, Ando was born in Kagi, which is now Chiayi, Taiwan in a rich family of Hoklo Chinese ancestry. He was born during the Japanese rule of that nation. After his parents passed away while he was a little child, he was raised by his grandparents in Taiwan. His grandparents managed a textiles shop there. He established his own textile company and went to Osaka, Japan, when he was 22. He soon acquired Japanese citizenship and enrolled at Kyoto’s Ritsumeikan University.
Momofuku Ando Career
Ando started off his career by starting a merchandising company while he was still a student. He used the money he had inherited from his family. But he was imprisoned for tax evasion in 1948. He lost his firm owing to insolvency but in an effort to start again, he established a new company in Ikeda, Japan. The business made salt. At this point, Japan was experiencing food scarcity and World War II had just finished. To obtain a bite to eat, many people were compelled to wait in chilly lines. Ando was taken aback to learn that the Japanese Ministry of Health was urging people to consume bread made with wheat flour imported from the US. The Japanese were more accustomed to eating noodles. However, the Ministry of Health argued that the country’s noodle producers were too modest to meet the demands.
Ando saw an opportunity and decided to create his own method for making noodles. Ando released the first box of precooked instant noodles on August 25, 1958, after months of trial and error testing. “Chikin Ramen” was the name of the original chicken flavor. Initially, it was regarded as a luxury good. He renamed his business “Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd.”. Ando established the Instant Food Industry Association in 1964 to support the development of the instant noodle market. “Cup Noodles”, his most popular creation, debuted in 1971. Ando expanded his product offers to encompass a wide range of flavors. He established other international businesses, beginning with his first in California in 1970. In Ikeda, Osaka, Japan, he inaugurated the “Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum”. He served as Nissin Foods’ chairman until 2005. In 2007, he passed away.
