Nancy Meyers Early Life

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Meyers grew up in the Drexel Hill area. She started acting at a theatre at a young age and her interest in screenwriting sparked when she saw 1967’s Mike Nichol’s film ‘The Graduate. After completing her high school education at Lower Merion High School, she attended American University. In 1970, she graduated with a journalism degree.

After spending a year working at a public TV in Philadelphia, Meyers moved to Los Angeles and landed a job as a production assistant on a CBS game show. Wanting to start a career as a writer, she got a job as a story editor and worked with various screenwriters on different projects. She also worked for Ray Stark’s company. After working as a story editor for some time, Meyers started writing her own scripts and quit her job to focus on becoming a screenwriter. She also took up film-making classes which helped her connect with talented directors such as Martin Scorsese. While trying to work full-time as a screenwriter, she started her own small cheesecake business to support herself. Meyers started working again for Ray Stark, however that didn’t work out and she was fired.

It was in the late 1970s that Meyers formed a partnership with Charles Shyer. During that time she used to work as a story editor for Motown. Meyers and Charles Shyer along with Harvey Miller developed the script for the 1980’s comedy movie ‘Private Benjamin’. The film script was turned down by various studios until it was bought by Warner Brothers. Nancy Meyers and Shyer also served as the executive producer for the film and Goldie Hawn starred in the female lead movie ‘Private Benjamin’. After the movie was released in 1980, it became the year’s biggest box office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing. Meyers and her team won a Writers Guild America Award (Best Original Screenplay) for Private Benjamin. She went on to create ‘Irreconcilable Differences’ and ‘Protocol’ with Shyer. She produced another film in 1987 titled ‘Baby Boom’ which was well-received by critics and audiences.

Meyers wrote and worked on various commercial and critical hits in the 1990s including Father of the Bride 1 and 2, Once Upon a crime, and I Love Trouble.

She made her directorial debut with the 1998’s Lindsay Lohan film ‘The Parent Trap’. The movie was a commercial hit and bought positive reviews for her direction.

In 2000, her film ‘What Women Want’ became the most successful film directed by a female director at the time. She went on to write and direct ‘Something Gotta Give’ in 2003. And in 2006, she made ‘The Holiday’. Her other great work includes, It’s Complicated, and The Intern.
