Nate Diaz was born to a Mexican-American family on April 16, 1985, in Stockton, California. He started learning martial arts at the age of 11 with his older brother Nick. Diaz attended Tokay High School in Lodi, California when he was a teenager. Diaz started out as a professional fighter, primarily competing for World Extreme Cagefighting. In his 2004 debut, he defeated Alejandro Garcia and prevailed. He lost to Hermes França in the second round of a bout for the WEC Lightweight Championship two years later.
