On February 4, 1965, Whitesell was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He is the son of John Patrick and Patricia Whitesell. He has five brothers; all of them are quite notable in the television industry. His brothers include the late actor Sean Whitesell and Thomas Whitesell from movies, writer Christopher Whitesell, college basketball coach Jim Whitesell and John Whitesell, a director. In 1983, Whitesell received his high school diploma from Iowa Falls. He earned his degree from Luther College in Iowa in 1987.

Patrick Whitesell started his professional career at InterTalent, a talent agency. He off by working in the mail room. During his two years with InterTalent, he advanced from the mail room to an agency position. Patrick later joined the “United Talent Agency” as an agent. After serving United for two years, he spent the next five years at Creative Artists Agency. He progressed through the ranks at Creative Artists, from agent to head of the talent division. Patrick joined the Endeavor Talent Agency in 2001. He later played a key role in the team that successfully merged the firm with the William Morris Agency.
