Pete Dye Early Life:

Pete was born on December 29, 1925. He was the son of Paul F. “Pink” and Elizabeth Dye. His father was involved in golf and build a nine-hole course on his family land. When he was young, he played and worked at the course. He went to Urbana High School.

He won the Ohio state high School Golf Championship before entering the U.S. Army. In 1933, he moved his family to Delray Beach, Florida. Pete and his brother Andy went to a boarding school Asheville School. He later entered Airborne School to become a paratrooper.

He then went to Florida and attended Rollins College. After he moved to Indianapolis, he became a salesman and was good at golf. He won Indiana Amateur Championship in 1958. Pete qualified for the U.S. Open in 1957 and his age was 31.

Pete Dye Design Career:

In his mid-30, Pete decided to become a gold course designer. His wife became his partner and helped him in this. Their first design was a nine-hole El Dorado course. This is now changed into a Royal Oak course. In 1962, they created a 18-hole course and named it Heather Hills which is now known as Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. Dye designed the Radrick Farms Golf Course in 1962. He went to Scotland to study the classic courses. In 1964, he began working at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel. Jack Nicklaus and Dye worked together on Harbor Town Golf Links. In 1969, he designed his course named Delray Dunes.

In 1970, Dye designed Martingham Golf Course, but the owners of the project were bankrupt which left Dye unpaid. Later the property was purchased by Richard D. Cohen. Dye redesigned the course for him and was also paid the previous funds. In the Italian province Dye designed a course known as Franciacorta Golf Club. Dye is said to be the best architect in the world. He is best known for his distinctive designs. He is also famous for designing the “world’s most terrifying tee shot” at TPC at Sawgrass.

Dye received Old Tom Morris Award in 2003. In 2004 he received PGA Distinguished Service Award. Dye has received the Architect of the Year Award, Doctor of Landscape Architecture degree from Purdue University, and the family of the year Award.

Dye got the disease Alzheimer’s and died because of the disease. He died on January 9, 2020.

Dye went to Rollins College and there he met Alice. He married her in 1950 and has two sons. They later moved to her hometown where they started golf course designing.
