Spector was born in Bronx but he grew up in Los Angeles. In 1958, he started his music career as a founding member of the Teddy Bears. He wrote ‘To Know Him Is to Love Him’ which was a number 1 hit in USA. After a brief apprenticeship with Leiber and Stoller in 1960, Spector co-founded Philles Records. He was 21 years old when he founded Philles Records and became the youngest U.S. label owner. He was called ‘The First Tycoon of Teen’ and the music industry hailed him for the unprecedented control he has over every stage of recording. He acted as a producer on the Ronettes, the Crystals, and Ike & Tina Turner. He usually worked with Jack Nitzsche who was an arranger and Larry Levine who was an engineer. He also helped ‘The Wrecking Crew’ rise to fame with his hit records. During the 1970s, Spector worked as a producer for some of the most famous individuals in music industry including Beatles, John Lennon and George Harrison. He helped produce 18 US Top 10 singles for various artists throughout the middle of 1970. Later that year he worked as a producer for Leonard Cohen, Dion DiMucci and the Ramones. After falling a victim to drug abuse, he became known for his secluded lifestyle and erratic behaviour. His career was on a pause while he struggled with his lifestyle choices.
Spector helped introduce the use of Studio as an instrument in music recording. He helped integrate pop art aesthetics into music. He was also the winner of 1973 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was induced into R&B Hall of Fame in 1989. In 1997, he was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Spector spend almost three decades of his career semi-retired and it was in 2003 that he was convicted for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. He was sentenced to prison for 19 years and he died in 2021.
