Raymond Kopa was a prominent French professional footballer during the 1950s. Kopa played as an attacking midfielder and was known for his dribbling and scoring ability. He was the first player to receive the Légion d’honneur.

Raymond Kopa Career

After starting his professional career at the age of 17, Kopa joined Angers and played with them for two years. After that he was transferred to Reims where he and his team won 2 French Championships (1953 and 1955). The team also won Latin Cup in 1953 and reached the European cup final in 1956. After playing a match against Spain in Madrid, Kopa caught everyone’s attention and the Spanish sports paper nicknamed him ‘Little Napoleon’. During the 1956-1957 season, Kopa was transferred to Real Madrid where he became teammates with Ferenc Puskás. With Kopa in it, Real Madrid won 3 European cup, and 2 Spanish league titles (1957 and 1958). Kopa also became the first French player to win a European cup. Kopa ended his career by returning to France and playing for Reims again. In 1960 and 1962, he helped them win Championnats after returning to the club.

As a player in France national team, Kopa player 45 matches between 1952 and 1962 and scored 18 goals. He also helped France reach 1958 FIFA World cup’s semi-finals by scoring 3 goals and was named as tournament’s best player.

Kopa was a midfielder but he could also play at center forward. His dribbling skills and speed combined with his short stature are often the cause why he and Lionel Messi are compared.

Kopa won a Ballon d’Or in 1958 and was a runner in 1957. He was also named in FIFA world cup All-Star team in 1958. He won Etoile d’Or in 1960 and was also named French Player of the Year that same year. He was named in World Soccer’s The 100 Greatest Footballers of All-Time list. He was also named in Pele’s FIFA 100 In 2004. He was also awarded a Golden Foot in 2006 as a football legend and he was given UEFA President’s Award in 2010.

He was honored with Chevalier of the Legion d’honneur in 1970 and Officier of the Legion d’honneur in 2007.

France Football association announced Kopa Trophy in 2018, the trophy was named in Raymond Kopa’s honor. It was awarded to the best young football player of the year and Kylian Mbappe was the first recipient.

Raymond Kopa died on March 3, 2017 in Angers, France. He died at 85 years of age and the French soccer federation confirmed his death but they did not reveal the cause.
