Roger Jenkins Early Life

Jenkins, the son of an oil refinery manager, was born in Scotland. He attended Edinburgh Academy and graduated with honours from Heriot-Watt University’s economics program. He earned his Diploma in Financial Studies from the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB), where he was also an Associate.

He was a skilled sprinter in his teens, competing for Scotland and Great Britain from 1973 to 1978, and he won multiple international races as well as the European Championships in 1974 and the Commonwealth Games in 1978. At the World Student Games in Rome in 1975, he took home a silver medal in the 400m. Both Roger and his brother David play important parts in Peter Hoffmann’s book A Life In A Day In A Year, which covers their athletics training at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh and their racing careers between 1973 and 1978.

After graduating in 1977, Jenkins spent a short time working at BP before joining Barclays as a graduate trainee in 1978. In New York City’s Barclays de Zoete Wedd, where he worked as the division’s head of private placements from 1982 to 1984, he left in 1987 to join Kleinwort Benson as a director and co-chief of financial markets, where he worked for seven years. In order to create a team that provided businesses with tax and regulatory management advice, he rejoined Barclays in 1994.
