In Long Beach, California, on November 12, 1988, Russell Westbrook III was born to his mother Shannon, father Russell Sr., and younger brother Raynard. Khelcey Barrs III, Russell’s best buddy, passed away tragically during a scrimmage in 2004 while they were both students at Leuzinger High School. Barrs and Russell had aspirations of playing basketball together at UCLA. Westbrook began playing for Leuzinger’s varsity team as a junior and scored an average of 25.1 points per contest as a senior. He received a basketball scholarship offer from UCLA, where his sophomore season saw him start for the team and win the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year award. Russell left UCLA in 2008 and went through the NBA draft.
