Sam Taylor was born on 4 March, 1967 in Croydon, London. Her father, David, abandoned the family when she was nine years old. She was raised by her mother, Geraldine, who is an astrologer and a yoga instructor. Her younger sister is Ashley while Kristian is her maternal half-brother. Prior to her parents’ divorce, Taylor was raised in South London close to Streatham Common. After that, the family relocated to Jarvis Brook in East Sussex. There, Samantha enrolled at Beacon Community College and later attended Goldsmiths, University of London. She has battled cancer twice. She received colon cancer treatment in December 1997. In 2000, she got her breast cancer diagnosis.

In the early 1990s, Sam began holding fine art photography exhibitions. She was a member of the Young British Artists group that first appeared in the 1990s. The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art and The National Galleries of Scotland all have collections of the artist’s works. She made her multi-screen video debut with “Killing Time” in 1994. Subsequently, multi-screen videos like “Travesty of a Mockery” and “Pent-Up” became her major emphasis. She earned the “Illy Café” Prize for Most Promising Young Artist in 1997 and was a 1998 nominee for the biennial Turner Prize. She made a guest appearance as an actor in a 1994 “Boy Meets Girl” episode. In 1996, Taylor-Wood helmed the short film “Misfit”. She created and directed a scene for the movie “Destricted” in 2006. The 2008 short film “Love You More” was also produced and directed by Taylor. She is now best known for her mainstream full-length films, “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015) and “Nowhere Boy” (2009). In recognition of her services to British art and culture, she received the honor of “Officer of the Most Excellent Order” of the British Empire in 2011. She was also given an honorable mention for the Sundance Film Festival’s Short Filmmaking Award in 2009. She has also received three BAFTA Award nominations.
