In Kingfisher, Oklahoma, on March 29, 1918, Samuel Moore Walton was born and up to the age of five, he was raised on a farm in Kingfisher. Sam was raised in Columbia, Missouri, where his family had settled, in the depths of the Great Depression. Walton enrolled in the University of Missouri as a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet after finishing high school (ROTC). Walton joined a fraternity, a secret society, and the “Scabbard and Blade” national military honor organization while he was a student. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from him in 1940. After graduating, he was drafted into the US military after only two years, forcing him to resign from his managerial position.

After leaving the service of the Army in 1945, Sam Walton started his entrepreneurial career in earnest. He first took over management of a variety store when he was 26 years old. He borrowed $20,000 from his father and used $5,000 of his savings toward the acquisition of his store. Walton eventually achieved such success that his landlord effectively made him vacate by declining to renew the lease. Walton bowed in and sold the store and all of its stock to this shrewd landlord for $50,000.

After that, Walton and his large family were able to buy a new property in Bentonville, Arkansas. A nationwide retail enterprise had its humble beginnings here. He started opening shops in Kansas City in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, he and his brother operated 16 shops across Kansas and Missouri. On July 2, 1962, the first Walmart opened its doors in Rogers, Arkansas. To better serve rural customers, the earliest Walmart stores were also built-in small communities as opposed to large ones. Additionally, Walmart stores were positioned close to the warehouses that supplied them. The business subsequently grew to include offices across the globe. Numerous Walmart stores may be found in countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, and many others.
