Early Life

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lathan completed his high school education in 1963 at Overbrook High School. In 1967, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in theatre from the Pennsylvania State University. Later, he moved to Boston to earn a master’s degree from Boston University. During that time, he was approached by WGBH-TV. He helped the network create the country’s first magazine show that was entirely produced by African Americans and was also completed for and about African Americans. Titled ‘Say Brother’ it was developed in 1968.

Career and Success

Starting out as a director, Lathan directed pilot episodes of many sitcoms such as Martin, The Parkers, Amen, Moesha, The Steve Harvey Show, Amen, and South Central, to name a few.

In 2000, he worked as an executive producer and director for comedian and writer Dave Chapelle’s stand-up comedy special ‘Dave Chapelle: Killin’ Them Softly’. After that, the two collaborated on various comedy specials together. Lathan produced and directed Chapelle’s 2004 special for ShowTime titled ‘What It’s Worth. He also produced and directed four Netflix specials for Dave Chapelle, namely, The Bird Revelation, Equanimity, The Age of Spin, and Deep in the Heart of Texas. In 2019, the duo also worked on Netflix’s fifth comedy special titled ‘Sticks and Stones.

Lathan started his work as a director in 1973 and since then he has directed multiple episodes of ‘Sanford and Son. He has served as a director for Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, Cagney and Lacey, and Roc. He made his feature film directorial debut through the 1984 film ‘Beat Street. His work as an executive producer and director includes HBO’s comedy special ‘Cedric the Entertainer: Taking you Higher’ and Showtime’s musical documentary ‘Its Black Entertainment.

Lathan is also known for collaborating with Russel Simmons on the stand-up comedy franchise ‘Def Comedy Jam’ which ran on HBO for 8 seasons. The series can be created for launching many popular TV and movie stars.

He is also credited as the co-creator of Run’s House. He produced an eight-part series for Oxygen titled ‘Running Russell Simmons and Comedy Central stand-up series ‘Ruckus’. In 2008, he created and produced a docu-reality series called ‘Brave New Voices’ and in 2009 he followed it up with ‘An Evening of Poetry, Music, and Spoken Word. The evening was hosted in the White House by Barak and Michelle Obama.
