Steve Case Early Life

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Case graduated from Punahou School. He also attended Central Union Church. In 1980, he joined Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. He graduated from college with a degree in political science.

The case started his professional career as an assistant brand manager at Procter & Gamble, which was located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Later, he joined Pizza Hut Inc. and served as their marketing manager of new pizza.

In 1983, Case started working for Control Video Corporation. The company was almost bankrupt and was bought by Jim Kimsey. Kimsey turned Control Video Corporation into Quantum Computer Services in 1985. It was an online services company and Case was hired as the vice president of marketing later he became executive vice president. Kimsey started working very closely with Case and started mentoring him to become the chairman and CEO after him. Kimsey eventually retired and Case was made CEO in 1991. In 1995, he became the chairman.

Quantum Computer Services was renamed America Online in 1991. They started providing services such as ‘AppleLink’, which was an online service for Apple. They also developed PC Link for IBM-compatible computers. However, AOL merged all Apple and PC services, and the new service that they provided reached almost 1 million subscribers.

AOL is known as the pioneer of the concept of social media. It is because, AOL focused majorly on communication features including chatrooms, instant messaging, and forums. The main strategy of AOL was to make online services available as well as accessible to mass consumers. In addition to providing these services, they also focused on making them affordable and easy to use.

In 2001, AOL merged with Time Warner. With the merger, they created one of the world’s largest entertainment, media, and communications companies. Although, the merger became a failure. In 2002, Case resigned from his position as chairman.

In 2005, he also resigned from the Time Warner board of directors’ position. In the same year, he started focusing and working on his investment firm called ‘Revolution LLC’. The firm focused on investing the majority of its budget outside Silicon Valley. The case is also the chairman of the Chase Foundation.
