Terry Lewis’s Personal Life
Lewis, who was born on November 24, 1956, in Omaha, Nebraska, immigrated to the city in the early 1960s. Jam first met Lewis when they were both in high school. However, they met while participating in an Upward Bound program for urban students on the University of Minnesota campus, not in a classroom. While Jam was earning his reputation spinning records for dancers at Minneapolis clubs, Lewis was pursuing a high school athletic career that earned him a football scholarship to Notre Dame University.
Terry Lewis Career Beginnings
Lewis was forced to abandon college when a knee injury during his final year of high school limited his athletic possibilities, forcing him to seriously contemplate a future in music. Lewis founded and played bass in the Flyte Tyme band, which shared the funk spotlight with Prince, another Minneapolis native and rising star, in the middle of the 1970s. When Lewis asked Jam to play keyboards for his band in the late 1970s, their musical relationship really took off. They started frequently creating songs together in early 1981.

In 2005, the couple founded the Flyte Tyme West studio in Santa Monica, California.
The Yolanda Adams song “Be Blessed” earned them a Grammy. They worked on the two Grammy Award-winning Chaka Khan albums Funk This. More than any other songwriter and production duo in history, they have the most Billboard #1s. The pair received nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for their work on the movie Poetic Justice.
