On July 14, 1949, Thomas Daniel Mottola aka Tommy Mottola was born in the Bronx, New York. He received his diplomas from Iona Prep in 1966 and Iona Grammar School in 1962. He then attended military school before earning his high school diploma. Mottola, a guitarist and singer for the R&B cover band The Exotics, left Hofstra University on Long Island to pursue a career in music.

Midway through the 1960s, Mottola signed with CBS as a recording artist going under the moniker T.D. Valentine. After failing in his quest to become a music sensation, he started working for Chappell Publishing and later founded his own management company, Champion Entertainment Organization. As a result of the connections, he made through his work at Chappell, he immediately secured Daryl Hall and John Oates as his first two lucrative clients. At this time, he gained recognition for successfully using the media for the rock band Xavion’s promotion.

At the age of 37, Mottola was in charge of CBS when he negotiated for Sony Corporation to buy the business. Mottola then assumed the roles of Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment in 1988. Mottola improved Sony Music’s image over his 15 years thereby establishing the company in 60 new countries, signing and advancing the careers of some of the biggest performers in the world. He ran Sony for 15 years, during which time the company’s annual revenue rose from $800 million to more than $6 billion in 2000.

To create Mottola Media Group, a new entertainment business that comprised recorded music, television production, theatre, and fashion, Mottola departed Sony Music Entertainment in 2003. Then Mottola acquired Casablanca Records’ rights and revived the label with singer/actress Lohan. Mottola and Cal Fussman co-authored the book “Hitmaker,” which was released in January 2013. A Bronx Tale by Chazz Palminteri was turned into a musical by Mottola in the first few months of 2016.
