He was born in Los Angeles, California on August 6, 1976. Kalanick was raised in a Los Angeles suburb. He developed an early interest in computers and by the time he was in middle school, he had mastered the art of writing computer code. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to study computer engineering. But he left in 1998 to work with some of his UCLA colleagues to form the start-up company Scour, Inc.
