Evan Thomas Spiegel is a businessman from the United States who founded and serves as CEO of the American social media company Snap Inc.

Early Life

Spiegel was born in Los Angeles on June 4, 1990 to Lawyers John W. Spiegel and Melissa Ann Thomas. He was brought up as an Episcopalian in Pacific Palisades, California. He received his education at Stanford University and Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica. While still in high school, Spiegel attended classes at the Otis College of Art and Design. Before enrolling at Stanford, he also took classes at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. Additionally, he completed an unpaid sales internship at Red Bull. He worked as a paid intern for a biomedical business, as a career educator in Cape Town, South Africa and at Intuit on the TxtWeb project whilst still a student.

Career

Spiegel was studying product design at Stanford. It was during his time at Stanford that he came up with the concept for an app with ephemeral messaging. Even though his peers did not agree with him, he persisted.Instead, he collaborated on the concept with Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, two other Stanford undergraduates. The prototype was introduced under the name Picaboo. They later renamed it to Snapchat. The app gained enormous traction.

In 2012, just before finishing his degree at Stanford, Spiegel moved on to focus exclusively on Snapchat. By the end of 2012, Spiegel’s Snapchat app had 1 million daily active users. Over the course of the following 15 years, Spiegel and Murphy promised to contribute upwards of 13,000,000 shares of Class A common stock to a non-profit organization. The aim of the organization would be to support arts, education and young people.

Spiegel’s Foundation

They established the Snap Foundation, a nonprofit with the intention of assisting in these areas. Their goal was to provide paths for underrepresented youngsters in Los Angeles. According to The Wall Street Journal, Murphy and Evan Spiegel now control more than “70% of the voting power” in Snap Inc. They hold close to 45% of the company’s total equity following the March 2017 IPO for Snap Inc. He finished the last few courses needed to graduate and graduated in 2018.
