Goldberg was raised in the nearby hamlet of Jenkintown and was born to a Jewish family on 2 April 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the youngest of three sons, with siblings Eric and Barry, and his parents are Beverly and Murray Goldberg. At the age of 15, he wrote and produced his first play, Dr. Pickup, which went on to win the Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival.
