Alfredo di Stefano was an Argentine footballer and coach. He played as a forward and has his name among the world’s greatest footballers. His nickname was Saeta Rubia. He mostly played for Spain after moving to Madrid, but he also played for Colombia and Argentina. He started his career at the age of 17.

Alfredo di Stefano Early life

Stefano was born in Barracas, and his father was a defender of the River Plate, but he was tired in 1912. He grew up playing street football and he played in teams as well. Everyone around him noticed his talent but later his family moved to Flores. Stefano played with his brother at the club and worked with his father.

Stefano’s father wrote a letter and recommended his son to River Plate. The club invited him for a trial, and he impressed everyone, soon he was in the second team squad. Next year he became a part of the first team which included legendary players. His coach taught him how to play low and in 1945 he made his first debut. At the end of the year, he won the title River Plate won championship.

 In the 1946 season, he got a real opportunity and scored two goals which led the team to victory against Estudiantes. Later he scored against his former team, and this made the fastest goal in the history of the Argentine championship. He scored 10 goals in 25 games.

 In 1947, he returned to River Plate and then River Plate was allowed to introduce Argentina. In November, River Plate won and Stefano celebrated his first international cup. In 1949, he moved to Milionarios which turned professional in 1948. Stefano scored 23 goals in 29 games. The club got its second title in 1951. In 1952, they won their third title and Stefano was again the top scorer. For Milionarios, Stefano scored 267 goals in a total of 292 games.

In 1953, Stefano joined Real Madrid and scored his first goal for Madrid which was a win against Racing de Santander. Real Madrid won La Liga in 1953-54, 1954-55, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1960-61, 1961-62, 1962-63, 1963-64, Intercontinental Cup in 1960, Latin Cup in 1955 and 1957, Copa del Generalisimo in 1962, Small Club World Cup in 1956 and European Cup in 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60.

Stefano played with three different national teams during his career. In the 1947 South American Championship, Argentina won this championship. In 1949, he played friendly matches for Colombia. In 1961, he qualified for World Cup and helped Spain qualify for 1962. After the tournament, he retired from international football.
