Bogut was born in 1984 in Melbourne to Michael and Anne, who are from Croatia and moved to Australia in 1970. He was released from the Victoria junior state representative squad when he was 15 years old. In 2002 and 2003, he participated in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL), where he contributed to the AIS’s first-ever East Conference championship. Later, he joined the Australian junior national team for players under the age of 19, and after helping the Emus win the tournament in Greece in 2003, he was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

He played for the Bucks up until 2012, when he and Stephen Jackson were dealt to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for three other players.
