Andrew Lloyd Webber Career

Tim Rice, a 20-year-old aspiring pop song writer, was introduced to Lloyd Webber in 1965 when he was a 17-year-old aspiring musical theatre composer. In 1966, they created a demo recording of the work, but no one was interested in funding it. “Try It and See,” a song by Rice and Lloyd Webber written for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969, was not chosen. It was then transformed into “King Herod’s Song” in their third musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, with new lyrics. The musical had its Broadway debut in 1971, and by the year 1980, it had earned more than $237 million globally. [24] It held the record for the longest-running West End musical until Cats passed it in 1989, running for more than eight years in London between 1972 and 1980.

2000s

Lloyd Webber was called “the most financially successful composer in history” by The New York Times in 2001 due to his enormous popularity in musical theatre. He changed his role to the producer in 2002 and brought Bombay Dreams to London. It lasted for two years at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and included lyrics by Don Black and music by Indian music artist A.R. Rahman. At the Palace Theatre in London, his production of The Woman in White debuted on September 16, 2004. With 500 performances, it lasted 19 months. Lloyd Webber returned to his judging duties in April 2008, but this time it was for the BBC musical talent competition I’d Do Anything.

2020s

The Gillian Lynne Theatre in the West End hosted the premiere of Lloyd Webber’s updated Cinderella in 2021. The COVID-19 epidemic caused the opening, which was initially scheduled for August 2020, to be postponed. In July 2021, he attracted media attention for declaring that he was “willing to be jailed” in order to open Cinderella to packed theatres, in violation of government recommendations and escalating Covid cases.
