Spade was the middle of three brothers and was born in Michigan. David Spade, an actor and comedian, is his younger brother. When Andy Spade was six, the family relocated to Arizona. His future wife and he met while both were students at Arizona State University. He and a classmate created the advertising company Spade & Hannawell in college; in 1987, it was recognised as one of Arizona’s Top 10 New Companies.
