Barbara Corcoran Early Life
Born and raised in Edgewater, New Jersey, Corcoran had a large family growing up. The family struggled to keep a steady income and Corcoran faced a lot of struggles growing up. She had learning difficulties and later found out that she was dyslexic. She started her high school education at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood and later transferred to Leonia High School. After completing high school, Corcoran graduated with a degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1971.

Corcoran started working at a very young age to support herself. She is said to have worked twenty jobs by the time she was 23 years old. With a poor family and no support, Corcoran did all she could find to be stable in life. She worked as a teacher for almost a year after graduating. Her first step in the real estate business was when she started renting apartments in New York City as a side job.
She was working as a waitress when her boyfriend at the time talked her into considering a job at a real estate company. In 1973, she was working as a receptionist for a real estate company in New York City called ‘The Giffuni Brothers’ when she co-founded her own company. The real estate company was called ‘The Corcoran-Simone’ which she co-founded with her boyfriend. Later, when they broke up after seven years, she formed her own firm called ‘The Corcoran Group’.
Corcoran found her own footing in the real estate world and in the 1970s she also started publishing a newsletter titled ‘The Corcoran Report’. The newsletter covered data trends of real estate in New York City.
She became her own boss and developed quite the business for herself. In 2001, her business was sold for 66 million dollars to NRT. After selling her company she also exited it after a short time.
